Poet and academic, Alex Derwent Hope was born in Cooma, N.S.W. and educated at Sydney University and Oxford University. In 1951 he was appointed first Professor of English at the Canberra University College. He held this position in the college and in its successor, the School of General Studies of the A.N.U. until his resignation in 1968.
